A Field Guide from Rohan Chaubey (Top Hunter 2026)

How Product Hunt works

Think of it as American Idol for tech and AI products. Moderators pick who makes it to the leaderboard, and then community members vote for the winners.

01 · What is Product Hunt

It's a daily launchpad where the internet's most tool-curious crowd finds new products

Makers post a launch page. For 24 hours, starting at 12:01 AM Pacific, the community upvotes and comments, and the leaderboard decides who wins the day. Building is easy now, so getting seen is the hard part.

859products launched on one real day

1–3%of launches get featured
24 hrace, 12:01 AM to midnight PT

Each square is one of that day's 859 launches. The 13 orange ones got featured, and the rest launched to an empty room.

02 · The show

Every launch is an audition, and only a few get a golden ticket

Tap a stage, or press Play, to follow a product from audition to finale. The dark side shows what happens on the TV show, and the light side shows the same step on Product Hunt.

The judges' table

Mods decide whether you get Featured, and upvotes don't sway them

Moderators make the call before launch day. Grade your own launch the way they would. You need four yeses for a golden buzzer.

Positioning

Can a stranger tell what it is and who it's for in five seconds? Is the category obvious?

Messaging

Does the copy sell an outcome, not a slogan? Benefits come before features, with the jargon cut.

Differentiation

Why this over the five similar AI tools they saw today? State it, then prove it.

Design

Does it look credible? The product is not an AI slop, the hierarchy is clean, and it works on mobile.

A hunter can fast-track you

Their feedback, guidance and positioning tips don't guarantee the win. They're a strong signal, though, and they help you shine on the day.

Missed the cut?

Keep sharing anyway

Products that aren't Featured are still listed, just not on the main stage. PH Forums nudge your followers.

The reality-show analogy comes from Rohan Chaubey's Product Hunt 101 forum post. Please credit that post if you reuse it.

The live vote

Once you're Featured, the audience takes over, and superfans count for more

New or inactive accountscarry less vote weightage
Active community members carry higher vote weightage

The goal isn't more votes. It's more quality votes from real people who actually hang out on Product Hunt.

Same 500 votes, 2× the ranking power

Low quality (inactive users)High quality (power users)

The weights are approximate, from launch experience. PH algo is not open source. You get 50 bonus points when your product gets featured.

Hunter · the mentor

  2. Featured?Moderators decide before launch day
  3. 12:01 AM PTYou go live along with everyone else
  4. First 4 hoursThe algorithm shows Featured products in random order
  5. 24 hoursThe community votes and comments
  6. Midnight PTFinal ranks lock in

The biggest decision happens before you launch. Upvotes don't affect featuring. If you aren't featured, you're not on the homepage, no matter how hard you push.
